From One Inspired Idea to Hundreds of Smiles
Kids Shop Charity began with a simple but powerful idea: every child deserves the joy of choosing something new, especially at the start of a school year.
Larissa Benson and Sarah Morra, best friends since middle school and now partners at RE/MAX Legends, were inspired by a foster parent in their brokerage who shared heartbreaking stories about children entering foster care with nothing but a trash bag of belongings - and few chances to express themselves through the little things that make childhood feel normal.
In 2017, they hosted their first back-to-school shopping day, giving foster children the opportunity to pick out brand-new clothes with the help of a volunteer “VIP shopper.” What began as a one-day event with 50 children has grown into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving hundreds of kids and volunteers annually.
The event is more than just shopping - it’s a full festival experience, complete with games, activities, and personal connection. Each child is paired with a dedicated volunteer for a morning of fun and one-on-one attention, culminating in a limo ride to shop for whatever makes them smile.
Today, Kids Shop Charity doesn't just support children - it uplifts volunteers and donors alike. Because when a child feels seen, and a community comes together to make it happen, everyone wins.
